Phillip C. Roark, Insala President and CEO, comments, "Aberdeen has uncovered trends we've found in our discussions with organizations we partner with for succession planning and talent management. We are excited to sponsor Aberdeen and share such relevant research and best practices in this important area."

The report findings indicate that 74% of companies are investing in a formalized succession planning process and 60% of Best in Class organizations are automating it. While succession planning isn't new, companies are finding that paper based succession planning processes aren't keeping up with the global workforce shifts that are leaving organizations with too few skilled incumbents to fill roles.

Start with the Process, Support it with Technology

Findings further indicate the investment in identifying an overarching succession planning process is critical to its success. Once in place, companies are looking to automate succession planning by supporting it with technology that delivers the following:
  • Collection of employee data including career history and skills - 74%

  • Automated corporate wide succession plans based on data - 32%

  • Analysis of risks, preparedness, and succession scenarios - 30%

  • Accurate development plans to enhance employee skills on an ongoing basis - 49%

  • Skills assessment testing - 32%

  • Internal recruiting process that matches potential candidates with the needed skills for planned positions - 41%

  • Organizational charts/replacement charts - 54%

The study also offers recommendations to guide organizations as they begin to develop the process to create meaningful organization-specific succession planning.
