Coaching is considered one of the first steps to improve an employee’s performance within an organization. Throughout many organizations, coaching programs have been implemented to give employees the opportunity to focus on the skills they may be lacking and become more proficient when performing required tasks. Coaching is often compared to mentoring as the two programs are very similar. However, there are a few key differences in these two relationships. Coaching is a short-term tool utilized when there is a specific task or action needing completion, while mentoring is more of a long-term relationship that is mentee driven to seek a mutual goal set forth from a learning agreement and contract. Mentors are usually internal volunteers; coaches are usually external and paid. Mentors help advance a person in their career development and business goals; coaches are there to increase productivity and job performance.
