Podcasting and Internet Radio... Great New Opportunities for
Career
Management

Wouldn’t it be nice to easily listen to
content-rich career management seminars on your
own time in your own
location? Or... one step further, be able to create your own online
seminars?
The
birth of “podcasting” offers just that opportunity.
Popularized in 2004, Podcasting is the creation of audio/radio shows, created
and put on the Internet. Users can download the shows, called “podcasts” to
their computer or MP3 player (such as an iPod) and listen whenever and wherever
they choose. Users can also subscribe to podcasts by using simple “podcatching”
software, enabling them to automatically receive new shows directly to their computer
as they are created. Any computer or digital audio player with audio-playing
software can play podcasts.
» How does this affect the career management industry?
Podcasting enables career management professionals to create
self-published,
syndicated "radio shows." The great news is that there are
some incredible podcasts
geared toward the career management industry already
available . . . and the majority
are absolutely free!
For career management professionals interested in creating
their own podcasts, it is
fairly easy and relatively inexpensive. All that is needed
is the content, some recording
software, a microphone, and a place on the Internet to make
the podcast available
(for example, your company website, or professional
association websites).
» Where are some of the best career management podcasts?
One of the richest collections of career
management/transition podcasts is available at
Landed.fm, an Internet radio station geared toward job
seekers. Its current
Program Guide
contains over 50
downloadable podcasts. Below is a small sampling of
available shows. Make sure
to check their
Program Guide
for their incredible full collection.

» What is the future of podcasting and Internet Radio?
Consider the following:
·
"While just 3.4 million Americans subscribe
to satellite radio, about 19 million listen to
Internet radio each
week, according to research firms Arbitron Inc. and Edison Media
Research."
Wall Street Journal,
December 13, 2004
Touting no
interference or static, and the fact that physical distance
doesn’t matter (i.e.
you aren’t
limited to listening to stations in your local region),
Internet radio and podcasting
are just
beginning to take hold and likely will reshape the radio
broadcasting industry.

excellent article "Podcasting."
