The big decision has been made, youíve decided to invest in a coaching program for your organization, but you are not done yet. Now, it is time for the next step- choosing the participants. You may start to wonder if it really matters who you choose to be coached, and the answer is yes, it does. There is no way to have a successful program without the right participants.

Unlike most mentoring programs, your coaching program is going to be exclusive and there wonít be any marketing components. Instead, you will need to choose the participants based on who you believe will gain the most from the experience and how it will benefit your organization.

There are many factors to consider when choosing your coaching participants and we have compiled 6 tips to help ensure that you are making the right choicesÖ

Develop a list of competencies

The competencies you choose should be focused on leadership and align with your organizationís goals.

Choose participants that are ready

The people that are ready for coaching will have interest in self-improvement or leadership development. Keep in mind anyone that has expressed a desire for career development.

Look for potential leaders

These will be your hi-potential candidates. Coaching is a great way to continue to develop these individuals and build your organizationís succession pipeline.

Consider someoneís willingness to change

They canít just be ready, they also must be willing. Coaching is about change and if they arenít willing to commit to the process, they wonít have a successful relationship.

Be open to all possibilities

Look to leaders throughout your organization to provide a list of names of individuals they believe should be coached. These may be people that you never considered.

Donít look at coaching as a penalty

Coaching is not a way to push someone out of your organization and should never be used in place of a difficult conversation that needs to occur.
