What Would be the Best Mentor for Career Development?

Having a mentor - a higher career level, often older colleague who helps guide you in your career - can be rewarding both personally and professionally. A good mentor can help you learn new skills, advance in your career and find satisfaction in your work. For career development, a mentor has to have the experience in the field, and usually has spent years with a company. They are also well connected in the organization (which could come in handy later for business connections). A good mentor has great coaching and listening skills and will take the time to communicate with you. Research has shown the best personal types for mentors are ENFJ’s. There is a shift currently happening in our day and age; the shift in the work force. With 4 generations of people in the work force today; there is a very diverse way of approaching tasks. However, we are slowly losing our strong footing; the baby boomers. In 2016, a myriad of baby boomers are at retiring age; and are taking full advantage of it; which is causing a shift in the work place. How do we maintain unhinged? Mentoring is how, the ones at the top are passing down the reigns to the ones up and coming.


What is Career Development at the Workplace?

It’s simple; when you think about it; It’s a lifelong process a person undergoes when they explore occupations and ultimately decide what career to pursue. It could be a step up in the company, a lateral move, or a step in a new direction all together. Career development is what will take an entry level position to an executive position. How is this possible? Through mentoring; Having a skilled professional guide you through the ranks.

How Does it Benefit the Organization?

When employees know their role and are adequately trained; they tend to feel more accomplished and in turn employee retention rates are better. Employees tend to engage more with one another, both same and higher level positions. Mentoring is also key when creating a succession pipeline in your company. Overall trends show employees are more productive, which causes the company to be more profitable.

How Does it Benefit the Employee?

When employees are well equipped, they are more motivated to do their job because they see rewards at the end. In basic terms, you’re being guided on how to get a promotion or advance in the company. It shows employees that if you want to be in the C-Level; it’s very possible.

Why Do Employees Use a Mentor to Improve Their Career Path?

A mentoring relationship is based on a learning plan that can be tied into career development. Mentoring relationship can be a long term one that allows one to achieve career goals; as opposed to a one step training process; it’s an opportunity to network with mentors that could potentially give you more exposure than you’d normally have. Mentoring allows an employee to be more visible within the organization. The mentor could be aware of opportunities within the organization that the mentee may be able to take advantage of.
